Feature
A window switcher for macOS, like Alt-Tab on Windows
macOS Cmd+Tab only switches apps, not windows. docktor's Cmd+Tab still steps through your apps, but it shows the highlighted app's windows as thumbnails so you can pick the exact one — closer to Alt-Tab on Windows. Free and notarized.
Cmd+Tab switches apps. This shows you their windows.
The single thing Windows switchers do that macOS doesn’t: cycle individual windows, not just apps. On a Mac, Cmd+Tab treats your four browser windows as one entry, so you land on the app and then have to find the right window. docktor’s switcher still moves through apps, but it shows the highlighted app’s windows as thumbnails above it. Press Up to step into them and pick the one you want by sight, or click it.
Made to feel like macOS, not like Windows 11
The idea is borrowed from Windows, but the look isn’t. The switcher is rendered in native macOS 26 Liquid Glass, so it reads as part of the system rather than a port. It opens on Cmd+Tab by default, so there’s no new shortcut to learn; if you prefer Apple’s app switcher, turn off Replace macOS Command-Tab in docktor’s settings to bring it back.
The rest comes along
The switcher pairs naturally with docktor’s Dock previews — hover to peek, switch to commit — and the same app fills the space beside your Dock with music, calendar, weather, and stats. If a configurable, switcher-only tool is what you want instead, compare docktor with AltTab.
Frequently asked questions
- Why doesn't Cmd+Tab switch between windows on a Mac?
- Cmd+Tab on macOS switches between apps, not windows — if you have three Finder windows or four browser windows open, it treats each app as one entry. That's the thing Windows users miss most: Alt-Tab there cycles individual windows. docktor's switcher gets you most of the way there: it still steps through apps, but it shows the highlighted app's windows as thumbnails and lets you pick one.
- How is docktor's window switcher different from Cmd+Tab?
- Cmd+Tab still steps through your apps, but above the highlighted app docktor shows a thumbnail of each of its windows, including minimized ones and those on other desktops. Press Up to move into the thumbnails, use the arrow keys to choose one (Right Arrow past an app's last window carries on into the next app's windows), and let go of Cmd to open it — or just click a thumbnail. Windows stay grouped under their app, so it isn't the flat list of every window you get from Alt-Tab on Windows, but you pick the actual window by sight instead of tabbing to an app and then hunting for it.
- Can I still use Cmd+Tab as well?
- By default, docktor's switcher replaces Cmd+Tab, and it takes over Cmd+` too: Cmd+` opens docktor's switcher and steps backwards through your apps, instead of cycling the current app's windows as it normally does on a Mac. If you'd rather keep Apple's behavior, turn off Replace macOS Command-Tab in docktor's settings: Cmd+Tab and Cmd+` go back to the built-in behavior, and Dock previews and widgets keep working.
- Is the window switcher free?
- Yes. docktor is free and notarized by Apple, with no account and no license. The switcher comes with the rest of the app — Dock previews, and music, calendar, weather, and stats widgets.
